EPITARGET Team TiHo
Institute presentation
The TiHo is one of Europe’s largest and most renowned Schools for Veterinary Medicine. For research and training of students, the TiHo has 19 preclinical departments, 6 clinical departments and 6 virtual research centers with over 1000 staff members and 2400 students. Systems Neuroscience, including both basic and clinical neurosciences, is one of the main and most successful research fields of the TiHo. In 2002, the virtual research Center Systems Neuroscience (ZSN; head W. Löscher) was founded at the TiHo. In the ZSN, preclinical and clinical scientists from different universities in Hannover (TiHo, Medical School Hannover, Leibniz University Hannover and others) work together on three main topics, hearing disorders, epilepsy, and movement disorders.
The Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy (head W. Löscher) of the TiHo is one of Germany’s largest pharmacological departments with a staff of >60 persons. W. Löscher’s group has been working for almost 40 years in preclinical epilepsy research and is one of the world’s leading groups in this area. Löscher’s laboratory developed the first animal models of drug resistant epilepsy and is using and providing these models in the search for new therapeutic strategies. Furthermore, for more than 20 years his group studies mechanisms of epileptogenesis and how to prevent or modify epilepsy by interfering with these mechanisms. The international visibility of the research of W. Löscher’s group is emphasized by the fact that the research is not only supported by grants from German and European funding bodies but also by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and that W. Löscher received in 2006 the Epilepsy Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society for research into the understanding of antiepileptic drug resistance. His current h-index is 69.
The group of W. Löscher is organized in 6 specific laboratories with respective teams and equipment, including in vivo neuropharmacology with diverse seizure and epilepsy models in rodents and 7/24 video/EEG monitoring for groups of mice and rats, behavioural pharmacology with a battery of behavioural models and video tracking for mice and rats, neurophysiology with multiple and single unit recordings, neuroanatomy/pathology with conventional and laser scanning microscopy, neurochemistry, and molecular biology/protein biochemistry.
