Institute presentation

The undefinedNencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, founded in 1918, is the first and one of the largest (243 staff including 107 researchers and 138 PhD students) non-university institutions in Poland in the field of biology. High quality of externally funded research and excellent publication record (well over 140 peer-reviewed publications and over 3000 citations in 2011; 10 of 35 Polish most-cited biologists) place NENCKI among the leading biological institutions in Central Europe. NENCKI capitalizes on its favourable location on Warsaw Ochota Campus, which represents the biggest concentration of scientific institutions dedicated to developments in biology, biomedicine, and bioinformatics in Poland. NENCKI is the only research centre in Poland, in which neurobiology is thoroughly studied from the molecular to the organismal level.

NENCKI is committed to international collaboration. Leading NENCKI research groups have been involved in over 20 international projects, including FP6, FP7, HFSP, EMBO and other. NENCKI runs its own PhD programme attracting best life science students from Poland and is involved in International PhD Studies in Neurobiology programme designed to addresses the fundamental mechanisms of neuronal function in health and funded by Foundation for Polish Science within the Innovative Economy Operational.

NENCKI provides access to all range of modern, constantly updated equipment either within core laboratories or as equipment belonging to research groups but open for general use. All laboratories have access to animal house, equipped surgery room for small animals; cell culture laboratory; histology laboratory; confocal and electron microscope laboratories with trained staff; rt PCR, laser dissection microscope, etc. In newly opened Neurobiology Center, core laboratories for animal modelling and transgenisation, molecular neurobiology (with Affymetrix and sequencers), brain imaging (MRI), life imaging of cellular functions and laboratory of advanced preclinical studies are available.

Katarzyna Lukasiuk, PI, has published 40 peer-reviewed papers. Her H-index is 22, with 1185 total citations and average of 29.62 citations/paper. She has an expertise in molecular biology of epilepsy and is co-author of number of papers describing global analyses of gene expression in epileptogenesis and epilepsy. Her group studies the role of new genes and their protein products in the pathogenesis of epilepsy and has experience in studying miRNA in animal models of epilepsy.
