Institute presentation

The department of Neuropathology of the undefinedAMC is a university department which investigates for diagnostic purposes about 200 autopsy brains a year, next to 200 muscles biopsies and 300 brain biopsies. The department is connected with the departments of General Pathology and Genome Analysis and there are facilities and expertise to perform laser capture microdissection, DNA extraction, RT-PCR, in situ hybridization, light- confocal laser- and electron-microscopy and cell cultures. For the in vivo and in vitro experimental studies AMC collaborates with the Center for Neuroscience (Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences) and the Netherlands Institute  for  Neuroscience  (NIN).  Department:  Astrocyte  Biology & eurodegeneration. For the clinical studies AMC collaborates with SEIN (Epilepsy Institute in the Netherlands).

Eleonora Aronica (neurologist and neuropathologist) has both clinical and basic science experience with particular interest in the pathogenesis and epileptogenesis of developmental glioneuronal lesions and is actively involved in the different research lines, including neuro-oncology, neurodegenerative diseases and particularly epilepsy with focus on the underlying patho-physiologic mechanisms of epileptogenesis and pharmacoresistance. Dr. Aronica is actively involved in international networks (European Confederation of Neuropathological Societies; Euro-CNS), including the organization of international courses, and participate in 3 EU projects: Grant of the European Union: HEALTH-2007-2.2.1-6:  “Neuron-glia interactions in health and disease”; European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research, COST action (2010): Bain Extracellular Matrix in Health and Disease (ECMNet; BM1001); "Pathways common to brain development and ageing: defining strategies for preventive therapy and diagnostics “ (HEALTH.2011.2.2.2-2). In 2011 she was awarded the Michael Prize (international award for the best contribution to scientific and to clinical research). The participant is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed original articles and reviewer for various scientific journals. Her h-index is 43.

Jan Gorter is senior scientist and neurobiologist at the CNS department at the University of Amsterdam. He has worked with animal models since 1984. His main interest is to understand the mechanisms that lead to epilepsy and pharmacoresistance. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles on epilepsy and other brain disease in journals like Brain, Journal of Neuroscience, European Journal of Neuroscience, Epilepsia and others. His h-index is 34.
